The VFLA Essay Contest is now for the Novice, Intermediate and Pre-Advanced Levels for students of French, German, and Spanish

Ode to My Language

Topic: We learn other languages for many reasons. Why are you studying language? What do you love about it? What challenges you? What about it makes you curious? Why should others study it too?

This year’s essay contest is actually a poetry contest. You have the opportunity to celebrate your language and to explain what it means to you in the form of a poem, or ode. In your ode, describe your language in a way that would make others want to learn it. Consider this your opportunity to advocate for French, German or Spanish through poetry.

Before your students start writing, download the details for entry HERE.

Awards: $75 will be awarded to two students in each of the three categories for a total of six contest winners.

Deadline: All essays must be postmarked or emailed by Tuesday, May 5, 2008

Vermont AATF is offering two tuition scholarships for Advanced French students (level 4 and up) to attend Accès Cinéma Africain in Montréal, April 17-20, 2008.

Students complete two applications: one for the VT-AATF scholarship and one for Accès Cinéma.

Teachers of student applicants must be current members of both AATF and VFLA.

Teachers must also sign the application and assure that the student will publicize his/her experience locally by September, 2008.

Any French speaker may attend Accès Cinéma. Click here for application for adults.

Deadline to apply is February 29, 2008. VFLA will notify winners in writing and forward their Accès Cinéma applications to Penobscot School along with tuition payment. VFLA will notify unsuccessful applicants in writing and will forward their Accès Cinéma applications to Penobscot School so that a place may be held while student seeks alternative funding sources. Look for an announcement in February of additional tuition scholarships.
